A Dog and His Boy

Once upon a time
a boy with his dog,
went alone together
straight into the fog..
The boy held his collar,
his dog stayed close by
But the fog had darkened,
they couldn't see the sky.
The boy became frightened,
his dog ran to protect him.
He took away all his frights
and all of his fears within,
then put them all inside a
box he buried deep below
his own inner heart,
never more to go.
He found his boy
and they walked
toward the light,
straight dead in to
the middle of a fight.
The fight was for the fear
the boy's dog had hidden inside,
because the frights had begun to rear
and were now climbing out of their hide.
The dog could not surrender anything at all,
he couldn't let go of his boy's fears or frights-
because it had been his job when they entered the fog.
Now it was his boy's turn to help his dog, to win the fight.
So the boy opened up his own heart, and showed it to his dog.
And inside the empty place where the fears he'd taken would be,
was instead a little message that read, thank you for being me---
You did the things I couldn't do, you did them because of your love,
and I wouldn't be here right now if you hadn't protected me back then.
But the boy's dog was confused because the frights had begun to hurt.
So the boy hugged his dog close and whispered into his scruffy ears,
"I'm going to destroy all of the frights and kill off all of those fears,
so that we can be reunited, like we were before entering the fog.
I'm going to need your help to unearth the residue of darkness
that you so bravely protected me from when I couldn't myself."
The boy's dog tilted his head, looked in the eyes of his boy,
said, "I will fight with you, and we will both see the glory."
The dog's boy smiled wide, and he hugged his dog tight,
His dog nuzzled him back, and they both went to fight.
