Daniel - Abomination of Desolation, daily sacrifice and a covenant

What the bible actually says about the "abomination of desolation" and what most believers take for granted that it says due to popular teaching are two different things. Here is the actual content of Daniel on the matter.

Daniel 9:27 - And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

covenant - beriyth: covenant, alliance, treaty, pledge, agreement
sacrifice - zebach: sacrifice, passover, annual sacrifice
oblation - minchah: gift, tribute, offering
overspreading - kanaph: wing, extremity, edge, corner of garment
abominations - siqquwts: detestable thing, an idol
desolate - shamem - to be desolated, appalled, stunned, stupified

Daniel 11:31 - And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily [sacrifice], and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

sanctuary - miqdash: sanctuary, temple
stength -ma'owz: stronghold, fortress
daily - tamiyd: continually, perpetually
(sacrifice) - not there at all

Daniel 12:11 - And from the time [that] the daily [sacrifice] shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, [there shall be] a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

daily - see above
sacrifice - not there at all
taken away - cuwr: turn aside, depart, be removed, put aside, come to an end

Peace treaty between antichrist and Israel, the established current nation state? Desecration of a third temple?  We might not want our expectations to cleave too hard to that theory.

thanks! i think the teachings regarding the treaty are to do with the rebuilding of Gods temple (this cannot be done in muslim country) .. after all he will declare himself in Gods temple.  i think the covenant with many is here and it is the UN, nations will soon renew comittment .. need to find out where Israel is in the whole thing, but I think the antichrist will bring so called peace to Israel, he has to lead people to believe he is the Messiah.

"i think the teachings regarding the treaty are to do with the rebuilding of Gods temple "

Let us consider something about the building of a third temple and restored sacrifices. When Yahushua mentions the abomination which is to be set in the "holy place", can this really mean a third temple with such restored sacrifices?

"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) " - Matthew 25:15

Our Messiah has come and any such temple or sacrifices done in it can not be holy. They, themselves, would, in fact, be an abomination. They would be a blasphemy against the One who was the sacrifice for us and who established His Holy Place with us.

Another consideration; the bible does not directly mention a peace treaty with Israel in particular. It does mention a covenant with "the many". It is likely that this is a global covenant between the antichrist's governance (perhaps through the UN) and all nations. I do agree that Israel must, along with other nations, be at peace, for this time with the antichrist and his kingdom and he will present himself as not only Israel's messiah, but the expected messiah of many religions.

I think that the Holy place could possibly refer to a temple and that the abomination refers to the antichrist or head of the UN declaring himself as god there and further abominations shall arise from there when he declares them (say making abortion and gay marriages legal as 2 examples - you can read plenty in the charters), those things which directly go against what God has taught us.  I think that the UN is an abomination that will cause desolation and thus the person put in charge will be the antichrist!  I don't think the sacrifices will be physical (although they just may be), rather against God's word.  The fact that our Messiah has already come, the second person must be an abomination, confirms it.

Just what I am thinking may happen!  I also thought it was the rebuild, so the second temple!  Perhaps missing some critical information - but can't be the only one, so it is great to have these things posted!

That word which has been rendered "daily sacrifice" (Tamiyd) means "continuity".

"and shall take away the (continuity), and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate."

It's an interruption of something that is continually happening. That is pretty broad, perhaps but i think it can be a very valuable piece of information to keep in mind as we go forward. When we see something that is a continual, ongoing state, come abruptly to a halt through some means devised by the antichrist (likely through the UN)...we will be able to recognize what this means.

it has been a continual process since the beginning, becoming more blatant each day, - the elite can't be behind plans spanning 1000's of years, they are merly being used by the beast to create the one world system .... things have all been leading us here .... slowly one by one going against and mocking bible teaching to a point of appointing a muslim president in the US and to swearing on the masonic bible (bush, i think did this), the laws speak for themselves regarding abortion, marriage and gays. all of this necessary to convince people that the teaching of the un is the only way foward and not the teachings of the bible.  this had to be a slow process or else people would not accept it so easily!

Yes, it had its beginning in the days of Jared. That's a long time to progress toward a final goal. I believe we might see some staple (or every facet) of our everyday normal lives simply come skidding to a halt with the "abomination."

yes we see this system drawing to a close! i want to learn what the bible says about the rapture, the closing ceremony at the olympics seemed to depict this before the mark and the beast being thrown to earth .. now i am curious!

not saying this is right.. just throwing it out here..

could the 'something that is continually happening' be strife?

the antonym of 'strife' is 'peace'.

(Genesis 3:17-19)

In Eden, after the fall, Eve was cursed with sorrows and Adam was cursed with struggles... a burden both mental (sorrows) and physical (struggles) which all mankind has had to bear since leaving Eden, until the present day.

even humans in the highest echelons of the elite have suffered sorrows and struggles.. Messiah suffered sorrows and struggles while in the flesh here on Earth.. no one born of blood has escaped sorrow and struggle.. all humanity knows the strife of life.

is the Antichrist someone we perceive as offering the end of war, famine, disease.. someone we see as capable of bestowing 'peace and prosperity' upon mankind.. the one who brings 'the peace' we have been warned against?

(Matthew 24:6; Mark 13:7)

Yahushua warned us to not be troubled by wars (current wars) and rumors of wars (prospects of future wars), because wars mean the end was not yet.. can we safely then say it is also a warning to be concerned by lack of wars (no current wars) and lack of rumors of wars (no prospect of future wars), because it would mean the end was at hand?

(1Thessalonians 5:3)

"...when they shall say 'Peace and Safety', then sudden destruction..."

(Revelation 12:9)

Would an Antichrist who brings 'world peace' be concerned about what happened in Eden?  i would say so.. Antichrist comes in the power of Satan.. Satan is the serpent who tempted mankind.. mankind fell, and was thence cursed with strife.. the very thing for which Antichrist will offer a solution of Peace.. The serpent was cursed first, then Eve, then Adam.

"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out..."

(Daniel 8:23-27)

Antichrist is the one we are warned brings 'Peace'.. is this 'Peace' the new thing to all mankind.. the new peace which removes the old, continual strife of mankind's life?

"And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify [himself] in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told [is] true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it [shall be] for many days.

And I Daniel fainted, and was sick [certain] days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood [it]."

Peace in Yahushua

speaking of "Astonished"...

"...I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it." (Daniel 8:27)

the word translated 'astonished' here is the same word translated 'that maketh desolate' in Daniel 11:31.. the word is 'shamem' and means 'stupefy'.

Cyprium posted the Hebrew for the first half of Daniel 11:31... here is the Hebrew for the second half...

"...(And they shall place)..." = Nathan נָתַן

prime root verb

1) Give; Put; Set:

  • to give, bestow, grant, permit, ascribe, employ, devote, consecrate, dedicate, pay wages, sell, exchange, lend, commit, entrust, give over, deliver up, yield produce, occasion, produce, requite to, report, mention, utter, stretch out, extend

  • to be put upon

"...(the abomination)..." = Shiqquwts שִׁקּוּץ

masculine noun

1) Detestable Thing or Idol; Abominable Thing; Abomination; Idol; Detested Thing

from: Shaqats שָׁקַץ

prime root verb

1) To Detest; Make Abominable, Count Filthy, Make Detestable:

  • to detest
  • to make detestable

"...(that maketh desolate)..." = Shamem שָׁמֵם

prime root verb

1) To Be Desolate; Be Appalled; Stun; Stupefy

  • to be desolated, be deflowered, be deserted, be appalled
  • to be appalled, be awestruck
  • to be desolated, be made desolate
  • to be appalled
  • to be stunned
  • appalling, causing horror

  • to appall, show horror
  • to lay desolate, be desolated
  • to cause to be desolate
  • to be appalled, be astounded
  • to cause oneself desolation, cause oneself ruin

I think this would be a possible, applicable thing to be named "continual". Maybe what most would just call day to day life. The struggle of survival perhaps. The antichrist will destroy with peace and claim there is safety only for that false reality to be met with sudden destruction.
