On April 20, 2010 an oil rig exploded off of the coast of Louisiana. After the explosion, it was reported that no oil was leaking from the damaged rig.

On April 22, Earth day, the oil rig sank and now 5,000 barrels of oil a day are spilling into the ocean. since this event a new ban on drilling is in effect.
"The US administration has banned oil drilling in new areas of the US coast while the cause of the oil spill off Louisiana is investigated. White House adviser David Axelrod told ABC TV it wanted to know exactly what led to last week's explosion on the BP-operated rig in the Gulf of Mexico. As many as 5,000 barrels of oil a day are thought to be spilling into the water, threatening US coastal areas".

Obama has now sent swat teams to the area.
""While BP is ultimately responsible for assuming the cost of the cleanup operations, my administration will continue to use every single available resource at our disposal, including potentially the Department of Defense to address the incident," Obama said at the White House.
He has ordered Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson to visit the site Friday. He also said the Interior Department is sending SWAT teams to the Gulf to inspect all platforms and rigs.
"We are being very aggressive, and we are prepared for the worst case," Coast Guard Rear Adm. Sally Brice O'Hare told reporters at an earlier news conference in Washington. "

it seems very likely to me that this event is no accident, that there was a planned explosion on this rig to make certain that a ban on drilling would continue. the explosion occurring in conjunction with earth day would make this event have the strongest impact for those who see domestic oil drilling as an attack on the earth. the most interesting part perhaps is the presence of swat teams. of all agencies or officials to send to such a thing as an oil spill, how much does it make sense that swat teams were what was chosen? are there dangerous criminals hiding near the oil rig? could it be possible that what is being seen here is the beginning of a plan for government to seize control of oil companies as they did banks and health care?
