Earthquake off Indonesia's Aceh triggers tsunami alert
An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 has struck offshore near the Indonesian island of Sumatra, near Aceh province.
The quake struck 214km (133 miles) south of Aceh's capital of Banda Aceh, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
A local tsunami alert was issued and later lifted by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The site is very near that of 2004's 9.2 magnitude earthquake. About 220,000 people were killed in the Indian Ocean tsunami the quake triggered.
The epicentre of the latest quake was at a depth of 61.4km, about 66km (41 miles) south-west of Meulaboh district, the USGS said.
The district, and other parts of Aceh, were devastated in the 26 December 2004 earthquake.
Ring of Fire
The quake hit at 1259 (0559 GMT). Local media reported some houses were damaged and power lines knocked down, Associated Press news agency said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center lifted its tsunami watch several hours after the earthquake.

The earthquake caused some panic in parts of Aceh
"Sea level readings indicate that a significant tsunami was not generated," the Hawaii-based centre said in a statement on its website.
"Therefore, the tsunami watch issued by this center is now cancelled."
The USGS earlier said it believed there was no threat of a destructive, widespread tsunami but the possibility of a local tsunami existed.
Indonesia is located on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of tectonic activity girdling the Pacific Ocean that triggers earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Aceh is on the north-western tip of Sumatra, one of Indonesia's main islands, and is frequently rocked by earthquakes.
One last year near Padang in West Sumatra province killed more than 1,000 people.
About 170,000 people were killed in Aceh from the 2004 earthquake and the tsunami it launched.
The waves spread across the Indian Ocean to cause death and destruction as far away as Sri Lanka, Burma and Thailand.

Earthquakes Are Increasing – It's Not Your Imagination
October 20, 2010
By Holly Deyo

It's not your imagination. More earthquakes than usual have struck in 2010. Because many events clustered together during the first seven months, it furthered magnified the data. If this increased trend maintains through the last two months of 2010, it could further push quake stats.

Something unique occurred July 23rd. Three massive earthquakes – 7.3, 7.6 and 7.4 – struck the Philippines in rapid succession, like seismic gunfire. Since then thousands of aftershocks have hit the same area.

Quakes don't have to peg the largest magnitude to bring utter destruction. Look at January's Haiti event. That 7.0 event is responsible for this year's massive death toll. "The cost of rebuilding Haiti’s homes, schools, roads and other infrastructure could soar to nearly $14 billion." As of last week, 2,000,000 people were still homeless.

More Swarms

Quakes clustered in several places around the U.S. this year – the most recent in Arkansas with more than 100 temblors since last month and more shakes are added daily.

Oklahoma also experienced unusually high quake activity this month including a Richter 4.3. Speculation raised the question that these might have been human-caused, but scientists dismissed the theory on Monday. Though the largest event only produced a Richter 4, the area bears watching as it includes the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Another intensive swarm hit southern Calif. in July and it continues today. These events coincide with the current quake series in Mexico.

Earlier in the year, yet another swarm clustered at Yellowstone. It managed to chalk up over 1500 shakes before quieting again in February.

Outside the country, Christchurch, New Zealand saw a record-breaking (for them) 1445 earthquakes following a 7.1 temblor that struck early last month.

Last year a 30,000-strong swarm pummeled Saudi Arabia. To scientists' surprise, these temblors revealed that the area is "unexpectedly volcanically active". Lava is just a mere 2km below surface.

Shaking Big, Shaking Early

This is how worldwide earthquakes stack up to date. Not only has a significant amount of quakes occurred, but extraordinary numbers of people have perished in them. Over a quarter million lives have been lost this year when only 10,000 is expected.

By July, yearly averages were already filling up. Disturbingly all of the larger magnitude quakes are at 100%, and some notably more so.

Magnitude 6.5 quake jolts southeastern Iran

The magnitude 6.5 quake struck 30 villages populated by no more than 4,000 people, state radio reported. Rescue efforts were being hampered by downed phone lines and landslides that blocked access to certain villages, official media cited officials as saying.
Almost exactly seven years ago in the same region, an earthquake measuring 6.6 struck the nearby city of Bam, killing more than 25,000 people and destroying a medieval castle that was one of Iran's most treasured archeological sites.
The worst of Monday's 10:12 p.m. quake appears to have struck the village of Hosseinabad, between the townships of Fahraj and Rigan, both less than 40 miles east of Bam in Kerman province, a vast region of high deserts and mountains.
Authorities in the provincial capital, also called Kerman, convened an emergency meeting to oversee rescue operations. The Red Crescent, the local affiliate of the Red Cross , set up tents to shelter those whose homes were destroyed or too unstable.
Iran is one of the world's most seismically active countries, crisscrossed by several major fault lines.
Iranian villagers continue to build mud-brick homes that collapse and smother them during earthquakes. State television reported that some locals in Monday's earthquake remained pinned in their homes.

At least 11 people are dead and 1,800 homes damaged. Downed phone lines and blocked roads hamper rescue efforts

Suspicious acts before 7.3 Christmas quake terrorizes Vanuatu people
Only several weeks before the 7.3 earthquake hit the South Pacific Island, Vanuatu on Christmas Day, terrorizing locals, all of its seismic monitoring equipment had been stolen, leaving no way to monitor earthquakes in the vicinity of the Port Vila city, no means to warn of tsunami triggers, and less means to determine if the U.S. military is to blame due to testing environmental warfare technology
